Cover: Solute Carrier Transporters (SLCs) are still a target class which is underrepresented in drug discovery, since they are challenging drug targets due to a lack of appropriate tools, including specific assay technologies, appreciation of their redundant and integrated roles, and suitable chemical probes. In this issue, Pommereau, Licher, and Bärenz describe the application of solid-supported membrane (SSM)-based electrophysiology assays, termed SURFE2R, to pharmacologically characterize electrogenic SLCs in the context of drug discovery. SURFE2R allows the usage of the 96-well format, which is an ideal platform for secondary and tertiary assays in a drug-discovery.
